ARTWRD - WITCHES TOTE BAG

Art Wrd Accessories asked me to create a design with Emily Dickinson’s words that would give the user a dilemma over which side of their bag to have showing. This would mean digging deep to compete with Aubrey Beardsley’s artwork on the other side.

Having spent a lot of time in the yew forests of Kingley Vale over the years, it felt natural to draw on the folklore surrounding the ancient yews, including druid ceremonies. I wanted to have as little computer intervention as possible and liked the idea of using fallen branches from the yews, found flints and chalk. I used these elements to build Emily Dickinson’s words. The typographical yew branches flow around the central depiction of a Druid ceremonial form.

After capturing these elements it felt important to return them carefully to the place they’d been gathered, leaving the balance of this ancient forest undisturbed.
